Ashutosh Sharma’s stunning knock under pressure helped Delhi Capitals (DC) kick off their IPL 2025 campaign with a thrilling one-wicket victory over Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in Visakhaptnam. Rishabh Pant’s first game as LSG captain did not go as planned, as DC snatched victory from the jaws of defeat.
Ashutosh was named Player of the Match for his outrageous innings that turned the game around. DC skipper Axar Patel won the toss and opted to bowl first. LSG started well, with Aiden Markram and Mitchell Marsh adding 46 runs in just 4.4 overs.
After Markram's dismissal for 15, Nicholas Pooran joined Marsh, and together they put on an 87-run partnership for the second wicket. Marsh was on course for a century but fell for 72, while Pant had a forgettable outing, getting dismissed for a six-ball duck. Pooran continued his attacking approach, scoring a blistering 75 off 30 balls.
However, LSG collapsed in the final overs, losing their last five wickets for just 40 runs in 5.2 overs. David Miller remained unbeaten on 27 off 19, guiding LSG to 209/8 in 20 overs. For DC, Mitchell Starc led the bowling attack with three wickets, while Kuldeep Yadav was exceptional, picking up two wickets for just 20 runs in his four overs. Vipraj Nigam and Mukesh Kumar also contributed with a wicket each.
Let’s take a look at DC’s chase
Given the pitch conditions and the way the ball was coming onto the bat, LSG’s total seemed slightly below par. However, their bowlers made a strong start, reducing DC to 7/3 early on. Axar Patel managed 22 runs, while Faf du Plessis scored 29, but DC still found themselves struggling at 65/5 in 6.4 overs.
Tristan Stubbs and Ashutosh Sharma steadied the innings with a crucial 48-run partnership. Then, Vipraj Nigam surprised everyone with his clean hitting, smashing 39 off just 15 balls at a strike rate of 260. At one end, Ashutosh remained composed, and with 18 needed off nine balls, he brought the equation down to six runs from the final over with a double, a six, and a four.
Veteran pacer Mohit Sharma was on strike in Shahbaz Ahmed’s first delivery of the final over, and Pant had a golden opportunity to seal the game with a stumping chance—but he missed. Mohit survived, took a quick single on the next ball, and then Ashutosh finished the game in style with a six, securing a dramatic win for DC.
DC’s next match is against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on 30 March in Visakhapatnam, while LSG will face SRH on 27 March in Hyderabad.
