Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) continued their winning momentum in IPL 2025 with a commanding 50-run victory over Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. This was RCB’s first win at this venue against CSK since the inaugural season in 2008, ending a 17-year wait.
Skipper Rajat Patidar led from the front with a crucial knock of 51 off 32 balls and was named Player of the Match. After winning the toss, CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad decided to field first, a move that left many fans surprised. RCB batters got off to a flying start as Phil Salt smashed 32 off 16 balls before MS Dhoni’s lightning-fast stumping sent him back.
Virat Kohli struggled for fluency and managed 31 off 30 balls, while Devdutt Padikkal looked promising with 27 off 24 balls. The highlight of the innings was Rajat Patidar’s composed yet aggressive 51 off 32 balls, which anchored RCB’s total. Tim David provided the perfect finish with a late blitz, scoring an unbeaten 22 off just 8 balls to take RCB to 196/7 in 20 overs.
CSK’s fielding lapses proved costly, with multiple dropped catches. Noor Ahmad was the standout bowler, taking 3/36, while Matheesa Pathirana picked up two wickets. Khaleel Ahmed and Ravichandran Ashwin grabbed one wicket each.
Let’s take a look at CSK’s chase
In response, CSK’s top order crumbled early as RCB bowlers were on song. Rahul Tripathi, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Sam Curran, and Deepak Hooda were all dismissed cheaply, leaving CSK in trouble. Rachin Ravindra showed some fight with a well-compiled 41 off 31 balls before he was dismissed by Yash Dayal.
Shivam Dube contributed 19, while Ravindra Jadeja added 25, but the required run rate kept climbing. MS Dhoni walked out to bat at number nine, a shocking move for many, but the legendary wicketkeeper still entertained the crowd with an unbeaten 30 off 16 balls, including three fours and two sixes.
However, CSK finished at 146/8 in 20 overs, losing the match by 50 runs. Josh Hazlewood was the star with the ball, picking up 3/29, while Yash Dayal and Liam Livingstone claimed two wickets each. Bhuvneshwar Kumar chipped in with one.
RCB now have two wins in two games and sit at the top of the table with a strong net run rate. Their next match is against Gujarat Titans (GT) in Bengaluru on April 2, while CSK will look to bounce back against Rajasthan Royals (RR) in Guwahati on March 30.
