Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) chances for the playoffs in this ongoing IPL 2025 are completely gone as they were defeated by Punjab Kings (PBKS) yesterday at Chepauk. PBKS skipper Shreyas Iyer led from the front while chasing the 191-run target successfully, and his 72 (41) earned him the Player of the Match award.
After winning the toss, Iyer asked the home side to bat, and it was a fantastic start for the PBKS bowlers. Shaik Rasheed, Ayush Mhatre, and Ravindra Jadeja got out cheaply as CSK were struggling at 48/3 in 5.5 overs. At number three, Sam Curran came out to bat and, despite these setbacks, he remained at one end.
Dewald Brevis joined him in the middle and added 78 runs for the fourth wicket before the young South African star got out for 32 (26). Curran continued to play his shots and registered his maiden fifty this season. Ultimately, Curran scored 88 (47) and finally announced his arrival this season.
However, in the 19th over, Yuzvendra Chahal came in and registered his second IPL hat-trick by dismissing MS Dhoni, Deepak Hooda, Anshul Kamboj, and Noor Ahmad in that same over. Eventually, CSK got bundled out for 190 in 19.2 overs.
Apart from Chahal’s four wickets, both Marco Jansen and Arshdeep Singh picked up two wickets each, while both Harpreet Brar and Azmatullah Omarzai grabbed one each.
Let’s take a look at PBKS’s Chase
In reply, PBKS managed a brisk start, courtesy of the explosive opening pair of Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh. When Priyansh got out, PBKS were 44/1 in 4.4 overs. Then, Iyer came in and stitched a 72-run partnership for the second wicket with Prabhsimran. Prabhsimran got out after scoring 54 (36).
Nehal Wadhera got out early, but it was Shashank Singh who again added valuable runs with the skipper to chase down the target. Iyer got out on 72 (41), while Shashank also got out for 23 (12). But their efforts were enough for PBKS to seal the win by four wickets with two balls to spare.
With this win, PBKS are now in the second spot with 13 points in 10 games, with a net run rate of +0.199. As for CSK, they are still stuck at last place with just four points in 10 games. CSK’s next match is against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in Bengaluru on 3 May. PBKS are set to face Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in their next game at Dharamsala on 4 May.
