Chennai Super Kings (CSK) slumped to a crushing eight-wicket defeat at the hands of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at Chepauk, extending their losing streak to five games — the most consecutive losses they’ve suffered in a single IPL season in their 18-year history.
It was an embarrassing night for the home side and a bitter return for MS Dhoni as skipper, while Sunil Narine’s all-round brilliance earned him the Player of the Match award. KKR skipper Ajinkya Rahane won the toss and chose to bowl first — a decision that quickly turned into a nightmare for CSK’s batting unit.
The hosts struggled and ended with 103/9 in their 20 overs, their lowest total at Chepauk in IPL history. Shivam Dube was the top scorer, with an unbeaten 31 off 29 deliveries. Vijay Shankar, despite being given multiple chances due to dropped catches, managed only 29 from 21 balls.
The surprise of the evening came when Dhoni walked out to bat at number nine, only to fall to Narine for a single run. KKR’s spin trio ran riot, with Narine taking three, Varun Chakravarthy claiming two, and Moeen Ali adding one wicket. Harshit Rana also impressed with two wickets, while Vaibhav Arora picked up one.
Let’s take a look at KKR’s chase
In reply, KKR’s batting made the chase look like a formality. Their openers, Narine and Quinton de Kock hammered 46 runs in the first four overs. Debutant Anshul Kamboj dismissed de Kock for 23 off 16 balls.
However, Narine continued to attack, smashing 44 runs off just 18 balls at a staggering strike rate of 244.44. Once he departed, Rahane (20* off 17) and Rinku Singh (15* off 12) guided the chase home comfortably. KKR reached the target in just 10.1 overs, with eight wickets in hand.
This emphatic victory has propelled KKR to third place on the points table, with six points from six matches and a healthy net run rate of +0.803. On the other hand, CSK’s dismal form continues, as they now sit in ninth place with just two points and a worrying net run rate of -1.554.
KKR will next face Punjab Kings (PBKS) in Mullanpur on April 15, while CSK will take on Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in Lucknow on April 14.
