IPL 2025: Who is the captain of Delhi Capitals?

The Delhi Capitals (DC) revamped their whole squad for the IPL 2025 in the mega-auction that was held last year. Before the IPL 2025 auction, Delhi Capitals had retained Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Abhishek Porel, and Tristan Stubbs, while they made a huge decision to let Rishabh Pant into the auction pool.

However, they made some big buys in the auction, getting KL Rahul for INR 14 crores, Mitchell Starc for INR 11.75 crores, T Natarajan for INR 10.75 crores, Jake Fraser-McGurk for INR 9 crores, Harry Brook for INR 6.25 crores, and Faf du Plessis for INR 2 crores.

Delhi Capitals also invested in some youth players like Sameer Rizvi, Ashutosh Sharma, and Darshan Nalkande and experienced players like Mohit Sharma, Karun Nair, Mukesh Kumar, and others.

However, with Rishabh Pant being released ahead of the IPL 2025 auction and being made captain of the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), the Delhi Capitals are without a captain and are the only franchise that has not named a captain thus far.

Who is the captain of the Delhi Capitals in IPL 2025?

Fans are anxiously awaiting the announcement of the Delhi Capitals' IPL 2025 skipper. Since Rishabh Pant joined LSG, DC may surprise everyone with their choice of leader. They are spoilt for options, with several players in the fray to become the captain.

They have Axar Patel, who was groomed by DC in the last few seasons and was the vice-captain in IPL 2023 and 2024. He is the foremost runner for the captaincy of the Delhi Capitals. In IPL 2024, Axar delivered strong performances, claiming 11 wickets with an economy rate of 7.65 and scoring 235 runs at a strike rate of 131.28 across 12 innings.

Another big name that could be made captain of DC is KL Rahul. KL Rahul has vast experience in captaincy, having led India in all three formats, Punjab Kings for two seasons, and then Lucknow Super Giants from the 2022-2024 IPL seasons.

KL Rahul is also a front-runner for Delhi Capitals captain as he is a sure-shot starter in the XI, can open the batting, keep wickets, or be a gun fielder anywhere.

The third big option for Delhi Capitals is Faf du Plessis as captain. Faf du Plessis boasts of a superb record as captain of South Africa, Jo’burg Super Kings, and Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Under his captaincy, RCB reached the playoffs in IPL 2022, 2023, and 2024.

Though Faf du Plessis is 40 years old, he can be used for a season as Delhi Capitals captain to groom Axar Patel or someone even younger to take the reins for the next 3-4 seasons.
