As the IPL 2025 season progresses, bowlers are stepping up in a tournament dominated by explosive batting performances. After a run-fest in Match 27 between Punjab Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad, where over 480 runs were scored in total, the Purple Cap standings saw some important movements. Despite the batters enjoying favorable conditions, the top bowlers of the season continue to make their presence felt with timely breakthroughs and clever variations.
Noor Ahmad from Chennai Super Kings has taken the lead in the Purple Cap race with 12 wickets in 6 matches. The Afghan spinner has been consistent with his wicket-taking ability, despite bowling in high-pressure situations and at a decent economy rate of 7.90. His control over length and ability to deceive batters in the middle overs has made him a valuable asset for CSK.
In second place is Shardul Thakur of Lucknow Super Giants with 11 wickets from 6 matches. While his economy rate of 10.38 is on the higher side, Thakur has a knack for picking crucial wickets in the powerplay and death overs. His aggressive bowling style and variation in pace continue to be his strength.
A close third is Prasidh Krishna of Gujarat Titans, who has also picked up 10 wickets in 6 games at an economy of just 6.96. His ability to bowl hard lengths and mix it up with the slower balls has made him Gujarat’s go-to bowler in crunch moments.
Gujarat Titans’ bowling unit has been a standout this season with Ravisrinivasan Sai Kishore and Mohammed Siraj also featuring in the top five. Both have bagged 10 wickets each and contributed to Gujarat’s all-round performance with the ball. Sai Kishore’s left-arm spin has been particularly effective in the middle overs, while Siraj’s pace and aggression have yielded results despite a slightly high economy rate of 8.5.
Hardik Pandya, now back with the ball for Mumbai Indians, has also taken 10 wickets in just 4 games. Impressively, he has already picked up a five-wicket haul, indicating a possible resurgence as a frontline all-rounder for MI.
Other bowlers in the top 10 include Khaleel Ahmed (Chennai), Mitchell Starc and Kuldeep Yadav (both Delhi Capitals), and Varun Chakravarthy (Kolkata Knight Riders). Starc and Pandya are the only bowlers with a five-wicket haul so far.
With tight competition and some bowlers peaking mid-season, the Purple Cap race is expected to intensify in the coming weeks. As batters continue to dominate the headlines, these bowlers are quietly crafting match-winning spells that could shape their teams’ playoff fortunes.
