The Indian Premier League 2025 witnessed yet another run-fest as Sunrisers Hyderabad stunned Punjab Kings with a record-breaking chase in Match 27. In what turned out to be one of the most entertaining contests of the season so far, SRH pulled off a sensational eight-wicket victory that has breathed new life into their campaign. The points table is now looking even more competitive as the mid-season approaches.
Punjab Kings came into this game with momentum and carried it forward with a monstrous batting display. Electing to bat first, PBKS piled up a mammoth 245 for 6 in their 20 overs. Shreyas Iyer was the standout performer, smashing 82 off just 36 balls with aggressive strokeplay and brilliant timing. He was ably supported by Prabhsimran Singh, who contributed a fluent 42 off 23 balls, while Priyansh Arya’s 36 off just 13 deliveries added valuable quick runs at the death. With three batters striking at over 180, PBKS looked confident of defending the total.
However, SRH responded with one of the finest batting performances in IPL history. Abhishek Sharma played the innings of his life, scoring an astonishing 141 off just 55 balls. His fearless approach and clean striking left PBKS bowlers completely clueless. Travis Head provided the ideal support at the other end with a composed 66 off 37, ensuring the required rate never escalated. The opening pair’s explosive partnership made the steep target look like a walk in the park. Heinrich Klaasen finished off the chase in style, remaining unbeaten on 21 off 14 balls, as SRH reached the target in just 18.3 overs with nine balls to spare.
PBKS’s bowlers had a night to forget. Arshdeep Singh and Yuzvendra Chahal were both expensive, conceding 37 and 56 runs respectively in their full quotas. Even though Harshal Patel took 4 wickets, he too went for 42 runs. The Kings simply had no answers to Abhishek’s onslaught.
This win lifts Sunrisers Hyderabad to four points, level with Rajasthan Royals. While they are still at the lower end of the table, the net run rate improvement and the confidence from this win could help them turn their season around. For PBKS, the loss is a missed opportunity to climb into the top four, but they remain well-positioned in sixth place with a healthy run rate.
The league table is now wide open, with six teams sitting on six or more points and jostling for playoff spots. Every game from here on will be crucial as teams look to build momentum and secure qualification.
