Robin Uthappa reveals a major mistake by Shubman Gill in the Eliminator

Former Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa has opened up on a major blunder made by the Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill in the eliminator against the Mumbai Indians at the Mullanpur venue on Friday, May 30.

Uthappa felt Prasidh Krishna, who was largely successful in the middle overs, was used in the powerplay in the Eliminator, which turned out to be a favor for the Mumbai-based franchise as the pacer leaked runs heavily. On the top of that, there were multiple dropped catches.

"GT's strategy was more reactive than proactive. Using Prasidh in the powerplay – despite his success in middle overs – was a misstep,” Uthappa said on JioHotstar.

“His first over was expensive, and they failed to course-correct. The 26-run and 22-run overs proved costly. On top of that, their fielding let them down. You can't drop that many catches and expect to win a championship," he added.

Uthappa, who previously won the IPL titles, with Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings franchises, asserted on how the MI opening batter Rohit turned the game upside down after he received two dropped chances.

"After the early drop, Rohit flirted with danger briefly but quickly recognised the need to take control. He shifted gears, played responsibly, found the gaps, and built key partnerships. His composure stood out. When players like Rohit, Dhoni, or Kohli are at the crease, the pressure is on everyone else. Sai Sudharsan is starting to reach that level too,” he stated.

Mumbai Indians will next take on the Punjab Kings in Qualifier 2 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday, June 1. Uthappa added that he is expecting a good battle between these two top sides.

"Punjab are hurting and will come out firing. Mumbai, riding high on momentum, will bring intensity as well. It's set to be a blockbuster, one for the ages," he concluded.
