RCB

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) are still searching for their first Indian Premier League (IPL) title. In the 2025 season, they hope to end this long wait for their loyal fans. Before the mega auction, they retained only Virat Kohli, Rajat Patidar, and Yash Dayal.

During the auction, they added 19 players, creating a 22-member squad ready to compete. However, with Faf du Plessis not in the team this time, the big question is who will lead them. With a strong batting and bowling unit, RCB remains a strong contender for the title.

1. RCB’s Strengths

RCB’s batting unit looks solid once again this year. With the addition of Phil Salt, the explosive England wicketkeeper-batter is likely to open the innings alongside Virat Kohli. Another option is Devdutt Padikkal, which could provide the left-hand-right-hand combination at the top.

A top order featuring Salt, Kohli, Rajat Patidar, and Padikkal promises to be a nightmare for opponents. Following them, RCB has added two genuine power hitters—England’s Liam Livingstone and Australia’s Tim David. Indian all-rounder Krunal Pandey is expected to bat at number seven.

With this lineup, fireworks are almost certain for RCB fans throughout the season. The bowling unit also looks strong with a mix of options, including Yash Dayal, Josh Hazlewood, Rashik Dar, Lungi Ngidi, Suyash Sharma, and Nuwan Thushara. This variety gives the RCB captain the flexibility to adapt to different situations.

2. RCB’s Weaknesses

Despite having power hitters, tackling quality spinners during the middle or death overs could be a challenge for RCB. Both Liam Livingstone and Tim David perform best on pitches with good bounce, where the ball comes nicely onto the bat.

This allows them to time their shots and hit massive sixes. However, on subcontinent pitches, especially turning tracks like Chepauk, it could be tricky for them. Opponents might target this weakness throughout the tournament.

3. RCB’s Opportunities

The RCB squad includes some young and exciting talents. One standout name is England’s Jacob Bethell. It will be interesting to see if he gets enough game time, considering the limitation on overseas players. Since his debut across all three formats, Bethell has shown great promise.

Suyash Sharma, the young Indian leg-spinner, struggled for opportunities last year with KKR. However, given RCB’s current spin options, he might get more chances this season. Players like Jitesh Sharma, Rashik Dar, and Swapnil Singh are also capable of making an impact when given opportunities. For these players, grabbing those chances will be crucial to their growth and success.

4. RCB’s Threats

RCB are yet to announce their new captain. Whether Virat Kohli will take up the role again or if Phil Salt or Rajat Patidar will be given the responsibility remains to be seen. If either Salt or Patidar becomes captain, it could be a significant challenge.

Leading a franchise still chasing its first IPL title is a massive responsibility, especially with the pressure of meeting the expectations of its loyal fans. Along with the captaincy, the added pressure to perform individually will be crucial for whoever takes the role. Whether it is Kohli, Salt, or Patidar, their batting performances will play a key role in shaping RCB's fate this season.
