IPL 2025: Mumbai Indians pick three new players for playoffs

Mumbai Indians (MI) have roped in the services of England keeper-batter Jonny Bairstow, English medium pacer Richard Gleeson and Sri Lankan dashing batter Charith Asalanka as replacements for Will Jacks, Ryan Rickelton and Corbin Bosch.

Notably, Jacks, Rickelton and Bosch will leave the MI camp after the team’s last league game.  Jacks will be replaced by Bairstow, who will join the franchise for INR 5.25 crore. Gleeson will be a replacement for Ryan Rickelton at the base price of INR 1 crore.

Meanwhile, Asalanka will come in as a replacement for Corbin Bosch at a reserve price of INR 75 lakhs. These replacement players will only be available from the Playoffs stage onwards, should MI qualify.

While Rickelton and Bosch have been named in the 15-man South Africa squad for their WTC 2023-25 final against Australia, Will Jacks will head back to England to take part in a white-ball series against West Indies.

Speaking about the stats, Jonny Bairstow and Richard Gleeson have accumulated 5000+ runs and scalped 100+ wickets, respectively. Meanwhile, Asalanka has scored more than 2,700 runs in more than 100 T20s, displaying his impressive skills in this format.

Notably, Bairstow will miss the next County Championship match against Nottinghamshire and possibly the first two T20 Blast matches, depending on how MI plays in the campaign.

Gavin Hamilton, Yorkshire's general manager of cricket, said on the club's website, “Whilst it is naturally disappointing to lose Jonny for the next few weeks, the opportunity for him to play in the final stages of the IPL at this stage in his career is huge.

"Jonny has been open with us about his desire to play in the IPL from our very first conversation with him, and we'd like to wish him the best of luck in the coming weeks. We look forward to welcoming him back for the early stages of our Vitality Blast campaign,” he concluded.

Mumbai Indians are currently occupying the fourth rank in IPL 2025 standings after 12 games, but have not yet assured a play-off spot.
