The last season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) was disappointing for Punjab Kings (PBKS) as they finished in ninth place with 10 points from 14 games. They won five matches but lost nine. Shikhar Dhawan was the captain of the franchise until last season, but this time, he is no longer part of the squad.
PBKS have shown immense faith in Shreyas Iyer, naming him as the new skipper. Iyer led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to the IPL title last season but was not retained. In the auction, PBKS spent a huge ₹26.75 crore to acquire his services. Not only as a leader, but Iyer has also been in excellent form as a batter.
He scored 345 runs in eight innings at an average of 49.28 and a strike rate of 188.52, with one century and one fifty in the recent Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. In the Vijay Hazare Trophy, he scored 325 runs in five innings at an average of 325.00 and a strike rate of 131.57, with two centuries.
In the last season, Jitesh Sharma was the vice-captain, but he was not retained. Among the available options, Arshdeep Singh could be an interesting choice for Shreyas’ deputy. Arshdeep has been one of the most in-form players in India's shortest format and is an integral part of PBKS.
He was the highest wicket-taker in the recent Vijay Hazare Trophy with 20 wickets in seven innings, averaging 18.25. Only two players, Shashank Singh and Prabhsimran Singh, were retained. With the newly revamped squad, PBKS fans will hope the franchise can lift their maiden IPL title under Iyer’s captaincy.
