IPL 2025: 3 Weaknesses of Punjab Kings (PBKS)

Punjab Kings made some exciting moves at the auction table during the mega auction. They went after Shreyas Iyer and spent a whopping amount of INR 26.75 crore for him. Also, the team brought in Ricky Ponting as the head coach. Iyer has been appointed as the captain of the side.

The franchise used the Right to Match card for Arshdeep Singh and spent INR 18 crore for him. They also got Yuzvendra Chahal for the same amount. Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis, who have already played for the franchise in the past, were also picked in the auction.

Here are the 3 weaknesses of Punjab Kings:

1. No clarity over who the openers will be

Before the auction, PBKS decided to retain just two players. One of them was Prabhsimran Singh and he is likely to open the innings for the team. However, there is no clarity over who will be Prabhsimran’s partner. Josh Inglis can be the opener but he has not played in the IPL so far and it is very early to predict his performance.

2. A weak pace attack

Marcus Stoinis and Glenn Maxwell will surely be a part of the playing 11. If Inglis opens the innings, there will only be one slot open for an overseas player. This one slot can either be filled by Marco Jansen or Azmatullah Omarzai. Arshdeep and either Jansen or Omarzai will share the load of pace attack. Arshdeep is renowned for his death bowling expertise but sometimes leaks too many runs. The same is the story of Jansen and hence, PBKS’ pace bowling might be a weakness this season.

3. Inexperienced spin bowling attack

The franchise picked Chahal for a hefty sum of INR 18 crore. He is the leading wicket-taker in IPL and is the only bowler with over 200 wickets to his name. However, there is no other spinner in PBKS’ squad of Chahal’s caliber. Harpreet Brar is there in the squad and is likely to make it to the playing 11. However, the left-arm spinner has picked just 25 wickets in 41 IPL games.
