IPL 2025: 3 Weaknesses of Chennai Super Kings (CSK)

Chennai Super Kings (CSK), one of the most successful teams in IPL history with five titles, will aim to add another trophy to their cabinet in the upcoming season. Led by Ruturaj Gaikwad, they have a strong 25-member squad.

Now, they will look to improve after missing out on the playoffs last season. They finished fifth with 14 points from 14 games. However, ahead of the new season, there are still some areas that could affect them as the tournament progresses.

Here are the 3 Weaknesses of CSK for the IPL 2025

Not having a reliable backup for MS Dhoni

At 43, MS Dhoni is still the heartbeat of this franchise, and there is no doubt he will give his all for CSK this season. His preparation, whether for batting or keeping wickets, speaks volumes about his dedication. However, the real concern is a backup. In a long tournament like the IPL, having proper backups is crucial in case of injuries or emergencies. At his age, it is challenging to keep wickets for 20 overs and then bat throughout the tournament, knowing the knee injury he had last season. Devon Conway could be an option, but the issue is finding him a place in the playing XI. Selecting him just because CSK needs a wicketkeeper might disrupt the team’s balance.

Over dependence on Shivam Dube as the finisher

Shivam Dube has been outstanding for CSK, especially with his six-hitting ability, which has made him a fan favourite. Once again, fans will hope to see him smash bowlers all over the park. However, the concern is the burden on Dube as the team's lone finisher. The finisher’s role is crucial in T20 cricket, whether setting a target or chasing one. Currently, CSK needs more support in this area. Both Vijay Shankar and Ravindra Jadeja must step up, as consistency has been an issue for them. If they can provide support, Dube will have more freedom to play his shots without too much pressure in crunch situations.

Lack of options of bowlers in the death overs

Looking at the available options, a lot will depend on Matheesha Pathirana’s shoulders when it comes to death bowling for CSK this season. Most other options, like Mukesh Choudhury, Khaleel Ahmed, and Gurjapneet Singh (who is still inexperienced at this level), are more comfortable bowling in the powerplay with the new ball. Nathan Ellis, the Australian pacer, is an option, but the challenge is finding him a spot in the playing XI, given the limit of four overseas players. This could be a major concern for CSK and might prove to be a decisive factor in their IPL 2025 campaign.
