Chennai Super Kings (CSK), the five-time IPL champions, will begin their IPL 2025 season on March 23 with their first match against arch-rivals Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Chepauk in Chennai. This will be the beginning of their quest for the sixth title in what is possibly MS Dhoni’s final IPL outing.
In the IPL 2025 auction, Chennai Super Kings again banked on the senior and experienced players by buying the likes of Rahul Tripathi, Ravichandran Ashwin, Sam Curran, and Mukesh Choudhary, among others. With a strong squad and MS Dhoni’s brilliance aiding them, CSK will be looking for a better finish than IPL 2024.
With that in mind, today we look at the 3 strengths of the CSK team.
Here are the 3 strengths of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in IPL 2025:
1. CSK’s Fortress of Chepauk, where spin rules
Perhaps the biggest strength of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) is that they have made their home ground, the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, a fortress for themselves. Chennai's home field still favors spinners; therefore, Noor Ahmad, R. Ashwin, and Ravindra Jadeja are vital resources. The lowest economy rate for spinners among IPL venues with more than 15 matches is 7.13 at Chepauk. They have a significant advantage because it is exceedingly difficult to defeat CSK in Chennai.
2. Strong pace attack
However, the CSK squad for IPL 2025 also has a good pace attack led by Sri Lanka’s Matheesha Pathirana. Khaleel Ahmed, Mukesh Choudhary, Gurjapneet Singh, and the return of Sam Curran give Ruturaj Gaikwad a huge opportunity to rotate his bowlers at will and keep the opposition on their toes. This gives them an edge in away games when CSK is at pace-friendly venues like Mullanpur and Dharamshala, where spin doesn’t provide much advantage.
3. CSK batting has experience and aggression
While the likes of Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway are conservative in their approach, CSK have bought Rachin Ravindra and Rahul Tripathi to offset that disadvantage. The middle order is strong with Shivam Dube, Sam Curran, Ravindra Jadeja, and MS Dhoni coming in with fireworks in death overs. Both the bowling and batting units of CSK are strong. CSK needs a strong showing from their starting lineup and hopes that players maintain their form if they are to make it to the playoffs.
