After a long hiatus due to COVID-19, the Indian Premier League (IPL) is all set to resume with a riveting contest between defending champions Mumbai Indians (MI) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
After a miserable outing in the 2020 season, CSK roared back in the 2021 edition and won five of their seven games before the tournament was postponed. MI, on the other hand, picked up momentum after a slow start. Both teams are settled at second and fourth in the points table respectively.
Mumbai Indians are eyeing to complete a hat-trick of wins, having won the trophy two times in a row. The Men in Blue have been very consistent in IPL and have won five titles. Not just the number of titles they’ve won but their record against particular teams is also staggering. MI have won 22 of the 28 games against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and 17 of the 28 matches against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).
The Rohit Sharma-led side is nearing a remarkable landmark. If MI can beat CSK in the upcoming game, they’ll pick up their 20th win against the Men in Yellow and will occupy the top two positions in the list of most wins against a single opposition in IPL.
Team | Opposition Team | Matches | Wins | Losses |
MI | KKR | 28 | 22 | 6 |
KKR | PBKS | 28 | 19 | 9 |
MI | CSK | 31 | 19 | 12 |
CSK | RCB | 27 | 17 | 9 |
MI | RCB | 28 | 17 | 11 |
Both Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings have met before in the current edition and it was Mumbai who emerged victorious after Kieron Pollard went berserk and blasted 87 of 34 balls, helping MI chase 219 with four wickets to spare.
