Indian top-order batter Shubman Gill has been announced as the new captain of the Indian Test team as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the 18-man squad for the England tour, starting on June 20 at Headingley, Leeds.

While Gill will captain the Test side, keeper-batter Rishabh Pant has been named as his deputy. The five-match Test series will be included in the new World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle. Meanwhile, Jasprit Bumrah is also part of the squad, but isn’t given any additional role.
On the other hand, batters Karun Nair, Sai Sudharsan, and all-rounder Shardul Thakur also made it to the squad, while star pacer Mohammed Shami wasn’t included as he isn’t able to bowl a longer spell in the longest format of the game.
"We obviously discussed every option that's there. Over the last year or so, we have looked at Shubman at various times, even when we played England last year. We are hopeful we have picked the right guy. He's a terrific player and best wishes to him,” said head selector Ajit Agarkar.
Notably, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravi Ashwin recently announced their respective retirements in the longest format of the game. Also, Gill is relatively new to the red-ball captaincy, having captained in only five games so far.
Other notable inclusions are Abhimanyu Easwaran, while Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, and Arshdeep Singh are part of the pace battery. Kuldeep Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, and Washington Sunday are part of the spin attack.
