India just completed a historic win by 336 runs in the second Test against England on Sunday. This match was played at the Edgbaston ground in Birmingham and this was the first time since 1967, that India had won a Test match at this venue.
India, after being put in to bat first, posted a mammoth 587 in their first innings. Shubman Gill was the standout performer, smashing a career-best 269 that included 30 boundaries and 3 sixes. He was well-supported by Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ravindra Jadeja, both of whom scored fluent half-centuries.
England responded with 407, largely thanks to a massive 303-run stand between Harry Brook (158) and Jamie Smith (184). However, six English batters were dismissed for ducks, handing India a significant 180-run lead. Mohammed Siraj claimed 6 for 70, while Akash Deep picked up four wickets.
In the second innings, Gill was once again the architect, scoring 161. Jadeja chipped in with another fifty, while KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant also contributed. India declared at 427/6, setting England an improbable target of 608.
Akash Deep struck early, removing Ben Duckett and Joe Root as England ended day four on 72/4. He continued his dominance on the final day, dismissing Harry Brook and Ollie Pope. Although Ben Stokes (33), Brydon Carse (38), and Jamie Smith (88) tried to resist, Akash Deep’s 6/99 sealed the game. England were bowled out for 271, handing India a commanding 336-run victory.
