Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir has stated that they are yet to decide on which three Tests Indian pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah will take part in the upcoming England tour, scheduled to start on June 20 at Headingley, Leeds.
Notably, the five-match Test series is part of the new World Test Championship cycle. Also, BCCI is looking to not stress Bumrah too much, and he is expected to play only three Tests in the series to manage his workload.
India's chairman of selectors, Ajit Agarkar, had already informed during the squad announcement that Bumrah would not take part in all five Tests after his team received feedback from the medical team.
"We have not taken that call which three games we want (him) to play. Look it's always difficult to replace someone like Jasprit Bumrah but we have got enough quality," Gambhir told the media during his pre-departure press conference.
"I have said it before (also) during the Champions Trophy as well that it gives someone else the opportunity to put his hand up and we have got enough talent. I know that he is a quality (bowler) but we have got enough quality in the squad," he added.
Furthermore, new Indian Test captain Shubman Gill also joined the queue, stating that the Indian team has enough pace battery to rattle the English batting line-up. Moreover, Bumrah’s inclusion will also depend on the series scoreline.
"We have picked enough bowlers and we have enough pace battery and our fast bowlers are in a great space to be able to win us Test matches from any situation and any position," Gill said.
"When you have Jasprit Bumrah... depending on how many matches you would play him, but whenever he would come back and play it would be a great sight for us, but I think we have a great mix and set of bowlers who can get the job done for the team," he said.
