Ahead of the mega auction for Indian T20 League 2022, the eight franchises have released their retention list. The BCCI had allowed the franchise to retain up to four players, with the overseas retentions not exceeding two. With the tight limit on the number of retained players, the franchises had a tough task of holding back the players, given that a few franchises had maintained the same core for a long time.

Mumbai had the most difficult task of retaining just the four players as all their players had done remarkably well over the years. In the end, the team retained skipper Rohit Sharma, all-rounder Kieron Pollard, Suryakumar Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah. This means that Ishan Kishan, Trent Boult and Hardik Pandya have been let go by the team.

Chennai retained MS Dhoni, Ravindra Jadeja, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Moeen Ali. Dhoni and Jadeja were certain to be retained. Gaikwad too had a phenomenal season last year which boosted his case. Ali was a surprise pick but given what he can offer, the franchise decided to stay with him.

Hyderabad have made some surprising calls and retained Umran Malik and Abdul Samad along with Kane Williamson. Malik and Samad are seen as players who can form a strong core of the team, while Williamson has been brilliant for them. Meanwhile, as expected, the franchise has let go of David Warner.

Punjab have retained Mayank Agarwal and Arshdeep Singh. This confirms the reports that KL Rahul is not interested in playing for the franchise anymore.

Bangalore have retained Virat Kohli, Glenn Maxwell and Mohammed Siraj. Kohli was certain to be retained, while the franchise has backed Siraj for a long time. Maxwell delivered fine performances in the last season and made a strong case for himself.

Rajasthan have stuck with Sanju Samson, Jos Buttler and Yashasvi Jaiswal. There is no surprise seeing the franchise retain Samson and Jaiswal. However, preferring Buttler over Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer will raise some eyebrows. However, both Stokes and Archer are not certain to play in the next season.
