The Indian T20 league 2022 hasn't really been kind to Mumbai. However, the 51st match of this edition saw the Rohit Sharma-led side beat Gujarat by five runs. It was a thrilling contest, to say the least. The Hardik Pandya-led side were on the losing side despite dominating for most part of the game.
After winning the toss, the Gujarat-based franchise decided to bowl last. For a change, Mumbai's openers were impressive as they got their side to a good start. Their skipper Sharma and Ishan Kishan hit some pleasant shots early on.
However, both of them failed to score a half-century. While Sharma was dismissed for 43, Kishan had to depart after scoring 45. Suryakumar Yadav recorded a rare failure as he had to return to the pavilion rather early. He could only score 11 runs this time around. Kieron Pollard was unimpressive yet again as he was dismissed after scoring a 14-ball 4. It is safe to say that he looked absolutely clueless against Rashid Khan, which resulted in the Afghanistan spinner getting the better of the Windies batter.
However, Tim David performed the role of a finisher to perfection, as he hit some lusty blows towards the end of the first innings. He scored an unbeaten 44 runs from just 21 balls. This included two fours and four sixes. His knock enabled Mumbai to score 177-6 in the first innings. After which, Gujarat got to an explosive start.
Their openers took the aggressive route early on, and looked positive. Both, Wriddhiman Saha, as well as Shubman Gill, got to their respective half-centuries. However, both were dismissed in a matter of six balls. After which, Sai Sudharsan and Pandya looked good during their short stay. However, both failed to see their side over.
The onus was once again on David Miller and Rahul Tewatia. However, the duo failed to finish the game for the first time in this edition. Daniel Sams bowled a brilliant 20th over, and defended nine runs. At the end, the Gujarat-based franchise fell short of their target by five runs. This is their second consecutive loss. Several fans took to Twitter to post some hilarious memes.
