Gujarat continue to win games for fun in the Indian T20 league 2022. They beat Kolkata by eight runs. This is their sixth win in seven games. As for Kolkata, they have now lost five out of their eight games.
Ahead of the game, Hardik Pandya did the unthinkable. He became the first captain to bat first after winning the toss. One couldn't blame him as the conditions were hot and humid. Yet, Kolkata's bowlers were disciplined with the new ball.
They only allowed Gujarat to score 47 runs in the first six overs. While Shubman Gill was dismissed in just the second over, Wriddhiman Saha tried his best to get to a big score. Yet, he had to depart after scoring 25 runs from 25 balls. Umesh Yadav dismissed him in the third ball of the 11th over. However, Hardik Pandya Pandya continued his good form.
As Vijay Shankar wasn't playing today's game, Pandya decided to promote himself up the order, and came to bat at three. He scored a brilliant 67 from 49 balls. His knock consisted of four fours and two sixes. He steadied the ship as Gujarat kept losing wickets at regular intervals.
As far as Kolkata's bowling is concerned, Tim Southee had a memorable game as he picked three wickets in his full quota of four overs. However, it was Andre Russell who stole the show. He bowled just the over, and picked four wickets in it. The fact that it came during the 20th over of the first innings was icing over the cake. This ensured that the Gujarat-based franchise only scored 156-9 in their stipulated 20 overs.
In reply, Kolkata's top-order were unimpressive once again. Despite having a new opening combination, both their openers had to prematurely return to the pavilion. The two-time champions were 34-4 at one stage of the game.
However, Rinku Singh and Venkatesh Iyer put on a handy 45-run partnership before the 24-year-old was dismissed in the 13th over. Mohammed Shami was sensational as he only gave 20 runs in his four overs, and also picked two wickets. Andre Russell however didn't lose hope as he hit some humungous shots. However, even he couldn't chase the total as he was dismissed in the final over. He scored 48 off 25 balls. At the end. The Kolkata-based franchise fell short of their target by eight runs.
