Chennai are unarguably one of the most successful teams in the history of the Indian T20 league. They have won four titles. Besides, they managed to purchase some top-class players during the mega auction.
Thus, like every season, Chennai enters the upcoming edition as favourites. However, there are still some teams that can give the defending champions a run for their money. So which teams can prove to be a threat to the yellow army? Here are four teams that can give a tough fight to Chennai in the Indian T20 League 2022:
1) Mumbai
Mumbai have given the MS Dhoni-led side a lot of sleepless nights. As a matter of fact, Mumbai have a better record against Chennai as well, and no team has beaten Chennai more than the five-time champions. Besides, most of the Mumbai players have a really good record against the four-time champions.
Chennai have lost to them as many as 19 times. It is to be noted that the two teams will be playing in Mumbai. Thus, the team in blue will have the added advantage.
2) Lucknow
Although Lucknow are making their debut in the Indian T20 league, they look like a formidable side on paper. Moreover, they have adopted Chennai's mantra of having all-rounders.
Due to this, they bat deep. This could give Chennai a taste of their own medicine. Besides, Lucknow have some aggressive hitters who can demolish any bowler on their day.
3) Bangalore
Although Chennai have dominated Bangalore in the past, the 2016-finalists have a pretty balanced side this time around. They have some world-class pacers, who can trouble Chennai's batters. The fact that a former Chennai player is going to lead Bangalore will make the contest even more interesting.
As Faf has played a lot of games with Dhoni, he would know how he thinks. Besides, Virat Kohli will be looking to be at his best as he no longer has the captaincy duties. Thus, the Bangalore-based franchise will fancy their chances to beat Chennai in the 2022 edition.
4) Delhi
Delhi were superb during the mega auction. They managed to purchase some players who can single-handedly win games for their franchise. In the last five games between Chennai and Delhi, the Rishabh Pant-led side have won four out of them.
The USP of Delhi's team is their match-winners. With Anrich Nortje, Axar Patel, Prithvi Shaw, Rishabh Pant and David Warner, they could defeat any team on their day. Thus, Chennai would certainly be vary of them.
