India would be stupid to look beyond SKY after T20 WC 2026: Michael Vaughan

Michael Vaughan declares “India would be stupid to look beyond SKY” after Suryakumar Yadav’s T20 World Cup 2026 heroics, urging selectors to build around the explosive batter’s consistency and game-changing ability amid Super 8 triumphs and future white-ball planning.

Former England captain and commentator Michael Vaughan has stated that India would be stupid to look beyond Suryakumar Yadav as the skipper of the Indian team after the conclusion of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026.

Under Suryakumar’s leadership, India managed to win all four Group A games against the USA, Namibia, Pakistan, and the Netherlands. However, they suffered a 76-run defeat to South Africa in their first Super8 clash at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

While Suryakumar Yadav is currently leading the run-scoring charts for India, accumulating 180 runs from five innings at an average of 45 and a strike rate of 127.65, there have been calls of his removal as a skipper post the conclusion of the mega event.

“I would say India would be stupid to look beyond Sky after the T20 World Cup. I think he’s a genius,” Vaughan said on Cricbuzz.

Furthermore, Vaughan has also shared his opinion on the under-performing Tilak Varma at No.3 in the ongoing showpiece event. In five innings, Tilak managed to score only 107 runs from five innings at an average of 21.4 and a strike rate of 118.88, with the best score of 31.

“Is it a concern? He probably wants his strike rate to be a bit higher. But I think when you’re looking at a whole batting lineup, you’ve got to have variations. You’ve got to have consistent performances. And sometimes by being consistent, your strike rate is not as high as some others. But sometimes there’s a player that just strikes at 130-140, and he does the kind of foundation, the glue roll within the batting line-up,” Vaughan stated.

India squad: Suryakumar Yadav (c), Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Sanju Samson, Shivam Dube, Ishan Kishan, Hardik Pandya, Arshdeep Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Varun Chakaravarthy, Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Rinku Singh.
