India reportedly want to host WTC 2027 Final, set to bid

The World Test Championship (WTC) 2025 final is all set to take place from June 11 to 15, with Australia set to lock horns with South Africa at Lord’s, England. This will be the first WTC final where India are not participating, having missed out due to a poor run of form that included a home Test series loss against New Zealand and a Border-Gavaskar series defeat against Australia Down Under.

However, according to a recent report in The Guardian, India are set to bid to stage the WTC 2027 final and are expected to make a formal proposal to the ICC this summer. So far, two WTC finals have been hosted in England — first at Hampshire’s Rose Bowl in 2021, and then at The Oval in 2023. 

This year, the final of the third edition will be held at Lord’s. India reportedly expressed their intention to bid for the 2027 final at the ICC’s Chief Executives’ Committee meeting in Zimbabwe last month.

However, there are some concerns regarding India’s potential to host the WTC 2027 final. One major concern for the ICC is ticket sales if India fail to qualify. For the upcoming final, Lord’s is already sold out for four days. Even in the 2023 final at The Oval — where England did not feature — the event was a sell-out.

Secondly, the ongoing war-like tensions between India and Pakistan raise further uncertainty about how the situation will evolve. This rising tension has already had an impact, with IPL 2025 currently suspended for one week. The BCCI confirmed the suspension in a statement, adding that further decisions would be taken after assessing the situation closely with all relevant stakeholders and authorities.

Meanwhile, if India does host the WTC 2027 final, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) may need to schedule another home Test match for England during that period — assuming England are not involved in the final. As a result, the ECB is looking for a quick solution. Still, as of now, there is no denial that India have clearly expressed their willingness to host the WTC 2027 final.
