In an interesting turn of events, the West Indies pacer Jayden Seales has been fined 25 per cent of his match fee by the International Cricket Council for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct on Day 1 of the ongoing second and final Test vs India in Delhi on Friday, October 10.
According to the official statement by the ICC, Seales was found to have breached Article 2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “throwing a ball (or any other item of cricket equipment) at or near a player in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner during an International Match.”
Moreover, one demerit point has been added to the pacer’s disciplinary record as his total points have been increased to two in 24 months. He received his previous demerit point in a Test match against Bangladesh in December 2024.
It’s important to note that when a player reaches four or more demerit points within 24 months, they are converted into suspension points, and the player is banned. Two suspension points equate to a ban from one Test or two ODIs or two T20Is, whichever comes first for the player.
For the unversed, the Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50 per cent of a player’s match fee, and one or two demerit points. In this case, on-field umpires Richard Illingworth and Paul Reiffel, third umpire Alex Wharf, and fourth umpire K.N. Ananthapadmanabhan levelled the charge.
Moving into the details of the incident, in the 29th over of India’s first innings, Seales fielded the ball on his follow-through and immediately threw it back at Yashasvi Jaiswal, hitting him on his pads.
Though Seales stated that he was attempting a run-out, the Match Referee, Andy Pycroft, replayed clips showing the incident from different angles and concluded that the throw was unnecessary and inappropriate, hitting the batter on the pads when he was within the crease.
