In a major piece of news for the Indian team, regular skipper Rohit Sharma has been ruled out of the second and last of the two-match Test series against Bangladesh. The 35-year-old couldn’t play the first of the two-match Test series due to an injury in his left thumb that he sustained during the ODI series against the hosts.
Subsequently, he started practicing for the upcoming Mirpur Test and the reports learned that he was recovering from the injury. But the recent development states that the all-format skipper of India will not be available for the second Test of the series.
With said that, it is also clear from the Indian perspective that stand-in skipper KL Rahul will resume the captaincy duties. Furthermore, the Indian camp will also like to go with the same opening pair of KL Rahul and Shubman Gill in the last match of the red-ball series.
"Rohit will remain unavailable for the second Test as well, which will begin on December 22 in Mirpur. Rohit had incurred an injury on his thumb during the second ODI match against Bangladesh earlier this month after which he was ruled out of the third game and the opening Test match," reads the report from Cricbuzz.
Here's what KL Rahul said earlier about Rohit Sharma's availability
Earlier, the stand-in skipper and Rohit’s deputy also stated the availability of Rohit Sharma for the last fixture of the Bangladesh tour.
“About Rohit, I think we will get to know them in the next day or two. I am not even aware of it. The focus was completely on the Test match,” said KL Rahul in the aftermath of a 188-run win against Bangladesh in the first Test.
Later on, the 30-year-old also talked about the performance of the Indian team in the first Test including the brilliant bowling heroics of the wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav.
“It’s just a gut feeling I try to go with as a captain – try and read the situation. I felt there wasn’t much in it for finger spinners when I bowled Ashwin first, who also felt like there was not much help from the wicket. I thought Kuldeep would bring in a different variety and that’s why we played him on a pitch like this. He brings in the variety, which is something different and it paid off, with which we are very happy,” he added later.
