After a disappointing loss in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2021-23 final against Australia at the Oval, London, India now turn their heads to the next challenge. Team India will now face West Indies in a multi-format tour that includes two Tests, Three ODIs, and five T20Is. However, the bigger picture remains the chance at another major trophy with the ODI World Cup returning to India in October-November.

While the current series against West Indies is targeted as a preparatory series for the grand showdown in the ODI World Cup later this year, Sourav Ganguly drops a worthwhile suggestion. Ganguly called for the need to have a good wrist spinner in the team given the Indian conditions playing their part in the upcoming world cup. He suggested Yuzvendra Chahal as his preferred option.

‘He performs extremely consistently in shorter formats’ – Sourav Ganguly on Yuzvendra Chahal

"(Ravi) Bishnoi and Kuldeep (Yadav) are there but (Yuzvendra) Chahal somehow misses big tournaments. He performs extremely consistently in shorter formats, whether it is 20-over or 50-over. It is important to keep an eye on him," the ex-India cricketer and former Indian Cricket Board President told Star Sports.

He then went on to talk at length about the importance of having a wrist spinner on the team. "When you will play Australia, England, or South Africa, a wrist-spinner makes a difference in these conditions. In 2011 there was Piyush Chawla, who bowled well. When we went to South Africa in 2007, there also our wrist spinners bowled well along with the fast bowlers. Harbhajan Singh was in that team. I feel it will be extremely important to keep a wrist-spinner in Indian conditions," he added.

Team India will kickstart their ODI World Cup campaign against Australia on October 8, as revealed by the schedule released last week. However, the headline event remains the clash against arch-rivals Pakistan at the Narendra Modi Stadium on October 15. The ODI World Cup will be conducted between October 5 and November 19.
