England captain Harry Brook has stated that his team’s crucial fielding lapses, including him dropping Sanju Samson’s catch early on in the game, turned out to be costly as England suffered a seven-run defeat to India in the second semi-final at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Speaking at the post-match presentation ceremony, Brook admitted that England failed to read the Wankhede conditions properly as India put up a massive total of 253 runs in 20 overs after losing the toss.

Notably, Samson was dropped in the third over off Jofra Archer's bowling, and later he went on to score a valuable 89-run knock, winning the player of the match award, for playing a crucial role in setting up a daunting total.

"We thought there might have been hold, spin in the first innings, slid onto the bat nicely, and India batted well. I'll hold my hands up and admit I made a big mistake dropping Samson. We weren't good enough in the field. We misexecuted, and can't afford to do that against India," Brook stated at the post-match presentation ceremony.

In the chase, Jacob Bethell proved to be impressive with an exceptional century, putting England in the chase for the majority of the second innings. Brook heaped praise on the young English all-rounder for his fearless approach in the chase.

"Bethell was absolutely unbelievable, he'll earn some serious money. To see him taking it from ball one showed the world what he can do. We had a good tournament; we should be extremely proud of how we played. We stuck to it the whole game; unfortunately, we were on the wrong side," he concluded.

India will next take on New Zealand in the grand finale of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 campaign at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday, March 8.
