In what comes as shocking news, two ICC U19 World Cup (WC) Plate matches have been called off. This is because as many as nine players from Canada have tested positive for COVID-19. These players will now isolate themselves.

However, their welfare will be monitored by the event medical team. As they have been prey to the deadly virus, the Canadian team doesn't have enough players and thus, can't take any further part in the tournament. Canada's U19 team were scheduled to play Scotland U19 in the Plate play-off semi-final on Saturday.

However, the game has been cancelled due to the COVID-19 cases. Thus, following the playing conditions, Scotland will progress to the 13th/14th play-of owing to their superior net run rate.

“We are incredibly disappointed to have to cancel two ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup games due to COVID-19 at this stage of the event. We were expecting to see some positive cases throughout the event and to date, these have been managed in accordance with our biosafety plan without impacting on fixtures. However with so many players from the Canadian team testing positive it will not be possible to stage these games," said Chris Tetley, the ICC Head of Events.

“The players are now self-isolating and will receive full support from the event medical team under the guidance of the Bio-Safety Advisory Group," he added.

It is to be noted that even India had faced a similar scenario earlier in the tournament when several players including their captain and vice-captain had tested positive for COVID-19 and thus, had to isolate themselves.

However, despite not having their services, India still managed to beat Ireland and Uganda rather comfortably. In the meanwhile, this edition has already approached its business end. Afghanistan, Australia and England are the three teams to make it to the semi-final as of now. Either India or Bangladesh shall join them.
