On Wednesday, January 21, the International Cricket Council (ICC) confirmed that the forthcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 campaign will proceed as per the schedule, with Bangladesh’s matches to be played in India.

Notably, this decision was taken after an ICC Board meeting via video conference after the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) requested its matches to be shifted to Sri Lanka due to the ongoing tensions between the two neighbouring nations.

“The decision was taken after considering all security assessments conducted, including independent reviews, all of which indicated there was no threat to Bangladesh players, media persons, officials and fans at any of the tournament venues in India,” the ICC statement read.

“The ICC Board noted that it was not feasible to make changes so close to the tournament and that altering the schedule under the circumstances, in the absence of any credible security threat, could set a precedent that would jeopardise the sanctity of future ICC events and undermine its neutrality as a global governing body,” the statement added.

“The ICC management also engaged in a series of correspondences and meetings with the BCB in a bid to resolve the impasse, sharing detailed information on the event security plan, including layered federal and state law-enforcement support,” the statement said.

If the BCB continues to stick with their decision of not travelling to India, Scotland is most likely to replace them on the basis of the ICC T20I team rankings. Notably, Scotland is currently ranked 14th in the ICC T20I team rankings, and they are the highest-ranked team to have not qualified for the tournament.

In the mega event, Bangladesh is part of Group C alongside West Indies, England, Nepal and Italy. They are scheduled to play three games at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata before flying to Mumbai for their final group game.
