ICC honours Virat Kohli as he joins the 100 million club on Instagram

Indian skipper Virat Kohli became the first cricketer on the planet to hit 100 million followers on Instagram. Kohli, who is considered as one of the best batsmen across formats, enjoys massive stardom all around the globe. He is now the 4th most followed sportsperson on Instagram, behind the likes of Lionel Messi, Christiano Ronaldo, and Neymar. Ronaldo is the most followed sports star with over 266 million followers.

Reacting to Kohli’s feat, the ICC, on their Instagram account, honoured Kohli with a tribute post. ICC quoted “ The first cricket star to hit 100 million followers on Instagram”. They also added a graphics of Kohli with Dwayne Johnson, Christiano Ronaldo and other celebrities with over 100 million followers. You can watch ICC’s post here.

Kohli joined Ronaldo, Messi, Neymar, Dwayne Johnson, Beyonce and Ariana Grande in the 100 million club. Earlier, Kohli became the 1st Asian to cross the 75 million followers mark. Kohli is followed by former Indian skipper, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who is the second most followed cricketer, with over 30 million followers. Along with Instagram, Kohli also has 40.8 million followers on Twitter. The Indian run machine became the heartthrob of many after emerging as one of the best batsmen to have ever stepped on a cricket field.

Kohli became the all format captain for India in 2017 when Mahendra Singh Dhoni stepped down from his post as the Indian skipper. Under his leadership, India reached the final of the ICC Champions Trophy, won the Test series against Australia in Australia in 2019, reached the semi final of the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2019. Earlier this year, he became the only Indian skipper to win back to back Test series in Australia.

Kohli has 7490, 12040 and 2928 run in Tests, ODIs and T20Is respectively and has scored 70 international hundreds. He’s only behind Sachin Tendulkar in terms of most international centuries. He’s also the most successful Indian skipper in Tests with 35 wins in 59 games
