The new Indian Test captain, Shubman Gill, has stated there would be pressure on every tour. However, he acknowledged that the team will miss the services of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma on the England tour, scheduled to start on June 20 at Headingley, Leeds.
Nevertheless, Gill feels this would give a perfect opportunity for others to step up and excel in order to be a part of the Test team in the long term. Furthermore, Gill also asserted that he would make the players feel secure around him.
"I think pressure is there in every tour. Definitely two experienced players who have played in our team for such a long time and won so many matches. It is difficult to fill their space, but as such, there is no different pressure. There is pressure in every series and all the players and teams are used to how to play in pressure situations and how to win,” Gill said at the pre-departure press conference.
"I don't have a particular style that I want to follow. As you play, as you get more experience, I think your personal style is more visible to the people. What I like is to communicate with the players, make the players feel secure, talk to them and give them comfort in their weakness and strength. So these are the things that I think are very important to make a bond with the players. If you are the captain of any team, you are the leader of the team. If your players feel very secure, then only they can give you their 100 percent,” he added.
Furthermore, Gill also talked about England’s Bazball batting style. He felt that their aggressive batting approach could give Indian bowlers a chance to excel. Eventually, he also spoke about the honour of leading the team.
"When I came to know that an opportunity has been presented to me to be able to captain the Test team, it was very overwhelming. I was quite overwhelmed with the whole experience. But having said that, I think it is a big responsibility,” he stated.
