I wasn’t sure if I would ever play Tests again after the India tour in 2019: Senuran Muthusamy

After scoring his maiden Test century vs. India, Senuran Muthusamy revealed his self-doubt after his poor 2019 debut: "I wasn't sure if I'd ever play Test cricket again." He spoke about his four-year fight in domestic cricket to return and conquer the subcontinent.

The South African bowling all-rounder of Indian descent, Senuran Muthusamy, has revealed that he thought that his career was over after he could scalp only two wickets in two Tests on the India tour in 2019, which was his debut international series.

Six years later, the all-rounder emerged as one of the important players for South Africa on Asian pitches. While he pocketed 11 wickets in the first Test against Pakistan in October 2025, he went on to smack an unbeaten 89 in the second Test.

Later in the next series against India, he went on to score a game-changing 109-run knock in the ongoing second Test, in Guwahati, after coming out to bat at 201/5. Interestingly, it was his maiden Test century in his eight-match career.

“My journey's been unique. Got a taste of international cricket in 2019 in India, debuted here, went back into the wilderness a little bit. Like you say, cricket is such a journey that you just try to take it one day at a time. You try not to think too far ahead,” Muthusamy said after the second day’s play.

“But there were times, especially after 2019, where I wasn't sure if I’d ever play Test cricket again and certainly not in India after we lost that series,” he added.

“So just really grateful for the support that I've got back home, for the people that are really close with me, the coaches, the support staff here, the players, my family back home, my friends. They've been incredible,” he stated.

It’s important to note that Muthusamy’s ancestors hail from Nagapattinam, Tamil Nadu. However, he revealed that he hasn’t travelled there as yet, although his mother and aunts have visited their native.

“Of course, I'm of Indian heritage, but that was quite a few generations ago. So my roots are in the south, in Tamil Nadu, my mum and my aunt have been to visit our extended family on that end of India, I haven't been there as yet,” he concluded.
