Former Indian cricketer and commentator Deep Dasgupta has stated that the Indian pace spearhead, Jasprit Bumrah, should play in the fourth Test against England, scheduled to start on Wednesday, July 23, at Old Trafford in Manchester.
Notably, Bumrah is the second-leading wicket-taker of the series, scalping 12 wickets from two Tests at an average of 21 with two five-wicket hauls. Notably, ahead of the start of the tour, Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee confirmed that Bumrah would take part in only three out of five Tests to manage his workload.
Furthermore, after losing the Leeds Test, Gambhir reiterated that Bumrah will still play only three Tests in the series as advised by the medical team. Interestingly, there were reports that Bumrah will only play the first, third, and fifth Tests in the series.
"Jasprit Bumrah in the fourth Test, absolutely yes. I've heard rumors that the plan for him was to play in the first, third and fifth Tests. But now, when India are 1-2 behind, the fourth Test becomes very, very crucial. You would definitely want the world's best bowler to play,” Deep Dasgupta told Star Sports.
It’s important to note that India will have an eight-day gap for the start of the fourth Test, with the Lord’s Test concluding on Monday, July 14. However, there is only a three-day gap between the fourth and fifth Tests.
“There is an eight-day gap between the two Tests. It remains to be seen whether the fifth Test is still relevant after the fourth Test, but the relevance of the fourth Test is considerable," he added.
Moreover, many former cricketers, including Anil Kumble, advised to Bumrah not to take rest and play the fourth and fifth Tests as India is currently trailing the series by 1-2 with two more games to go.
