Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir has stated that he doesn’t look at the individual runs by the batters; instead, he would be eager to look at the partnerships built by them in the longest format of the game.

Notably, Sai Sudharsan, who made his comeback in the fourth Test at Old Trafford in Manchester, went on to score a beautiful half-century in the first innings to impress everyone. He stitched a 95-run partnership with Ravindra Jadeja during his 61-run knock.

“I don’t even look at the individual runs. I only look at the partnerships. I think if we want to build this team, we want to build this team on partnerships, not on individual scores. I think if the number three can have a partnership and can contribute in that partnership, I think he’s done his job. That is something which is very important. And Sai is a phenomenal talent,” Gambhir told the reporters after the Manchester Test.

However, Sudharsan couldn’t disturb the scorecard in the second innings as he got out for a golden duck off Chris Woakes. Nevertheless, Gambhir backed Sudharsan to come out well, adding that everyone has to be patient with the young batter.

“I think you can’t keep judging people after every game. He’s 23, playing his first Test series in England in English conditions, and still putting his hand out and scoring that brilliant 50 or 60. I think you’ve got to have patience with these boys,” Gambhir added.

Though Sudharsan made his Test debut in the opening Test in Leeds, he could score only 30 runs in that particular game as Karun Nair took his No.3 spot in the Birmingham and Lord’s Tests.

Team India will take on England in the fifth and final Test at Kennington Oval in London, starting on Thursday, July 31.
