I deleted everything from my phone before the start of the Asia Cup: Suryakumar Yadav

Indian T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav has opened up about playing against Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2025 campaign, despite calls for a boycott throughout the nation. Notably, India locked horns with Pakistan thrice in the campaign and won all three of them.

Speaking exclusively to The Indian Express, Surya has revealed that he deleted all the applications from his mobile before heading to the eight-team showpiece event, keeping only WhatsApp and normal calls active. 

“2-3 weeks before we started for the Asia Cup, I deleted everything from my phone… all the apps. Only WhatsApp and normal calls were available. Everything else was being taken care of by my team. That keeps me calm,” Suryakumar Yadav told the Indian Express.

Importantly, India went on to stay unbeaten in the eight-team competition, defending the title after defeating Pakistan in the grand finale. When asked about the no-handshake controversy with Pakistan players, Surya disclosed that it was a collective decision within the team.

“Yes. That (no handshakes) was one stand which we took collectively. It was my birthday too, so I thought it was a good day,” he stated.

Additionally, the Indian T20I captain also discussed Shubman Gill taking up the captaincy in Test and ODI formats. Surya has emphasized that the camaraderie between the two has been amazing on and off the field, adding that Gill has done an exceptional job as a captain so far.

“It motivates you to do better. The camaraderie between the two of us is amazing off the field and on the field. I know the kind of player he is, the kind of human being he is. It helps me to do well myself. I left fear long back. I believe if I am following everything that has to be followed, working really hard, everything will be taken care of. But I am really happy for him. He has done really well,” he concluded.
