Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir believes Australian youngster Sam Konstas had no business in getting in a heated altercation with star speedster Jasprit Bumrah at the end of play on Day 1.
Bumrah was trying to rush in his over when Usman Khawaja backed out and took his own time. This infuriated Bumrah as he had his hands wide and asked the batter to be ready. Khawaja wanted to ensure it was the last over of the day while Bumrah just wanted to slip in another over.
Just then, Konstas had a few words to say to Bumrah and that fired up the stand-in Indian captain. The effect was seen at the other end as Bumrah dismissed Khawaja on the final ball of the day and the Indian fielders swarmed around Konstas after the dismissal.
Here's what Gautam Gambhir had to say in the post-match press conference:
"Tough sport played by tough men. He had no right to be talking to Jasprit Bumrah when Usman Khawaja was taking time. He had no right and no business to be involved with Jasprit Bumrah. That was the job of the umpire and the guy who is batting at the other end."
Gautam Gambhir on Sam Konstas' future
This wasn't the first time Sam Konstas had a heated altercation with an Indian player as he had a similar exchange with Virat Kohli at the MCG. Konstas showed flashes of brilliance during his four innings and here's what Gambhir had to say about Konstas' future:
"It is a tough sport played by tough men. These things happen. A lot of Australian players have done that in the past. I am sure that is why he is playing Test cricket. Sometimes, you can't go on and keep smashing from the first ball. You have to respect red-ball cricket. You have to learn from your experiences. Test cricket is about improving every day,” he added.
