On 3 April 2023, all fans were eagerly waiting to see Chennai in action at the Chepauk stadium against Lucknow. Chennai lost the first match against Gujarat while Lucknow defeated Delhi in their season opener. So, Chennai fans were hoping their team to make a comeback in this match while KL Rahul and his men were looking for another win.

However, after a long gap of 1426 days, Chennai played a game in the Indian T20 League. Speaking of the match, Rahul won the toss and asked Chennai to bat first. The home side went with an unchanged playing XI from the last game. But, Lucknow considered Yash Thakur in place of Jaydev Unadkat from their last playing XI.

Chennai registered their first win of the Indian T20 League 2023 against Lucknow

For Chennai, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway came out to open the innings. They put up a blistering show of hitting as they put up a solid partnership of 110 runs for the first wicket. Gaikwad continued his rich-vein form and scored 57 runs off 31 balls, including three fours and four sixes. Conway scored 47 runs off 29 balls, including five fours and two sixes. Then, other batters came up with some small but impactful contributions until MS Dhoni came into the picture. He came and scored 12 runs in just three balls, including two sixes in the last over of the innings. Thus, Chennai scored 217 runs for seven wickets in 20 overs.

For Lucknow, both Mark Wood and Ravi Bishnoi took two wickets each while Avesh Khan took one scalp. In reply, the skipper KL Rahul and Kyle Mayers came out for the opening. Mayers scored 53 runs off 22 balls, including eight fours and two sixes. But, Rahul failed again as he scored 20 runs off 18 balls. Then they lost two more wickets quickly and reached 125 runs for four wickets in 12 overs. Moeen Ali was the star of the show as he picked up four wickets for 26 runs. Finally, Lucknow fell short by 12 runs as they scored 205 runs for seven wickets. Thus, Chennai registered their first win of this season.
