Former India spinner Dilip Doshi passes away at 77

Veteran Indian left-arm spinner Dilip Doshi, who played a significant role for India in Test cricket, has passed away at the age of 77, leaving behind a legacy of graceful bowling.

According to reports published on Cricbuzz, the former India spinner Dilip Doshi passed away at the age of 77. Doshi, who represented India in 33 Tests and 15 ODIs, died in London on Monday, June 23. He was survived by his wife, son, and daughter.

It’s important to note that Doshi played for Team India between 1979 and 1983 after making his debut at the age of 32. He pocketed a total of 114 wickets with six fifers in his 33 Tests, while he scalped 22 wickets in 15 ODIs he played for the Men In Blue at an economy rate of 3.96.

Representing Bengal and Saurashtra in domestic cricket between 1968 to 1986, Dohi scalped 898 wickets from 238 first-class games, accumulating 43 five-wicket hauls and six 10-wicket hauls.

Niranjan Shah, a close associate of Doshi and a former BCCI secretary, responded, stating it was a personal loss to him. Also, Saurashtra Cricket Association President Jaydev Shah stated that Doshi was like an uncle to him.

"It is an extremely painful and personal loss for me. Dilip was not only one of the legendary cricketers, but also one of the finest human beings I have ever known. His noble heart, integrity, and priceless dedication to the game made him truly special," Niranjan Shah said.

"His passing is an irreparable loss to the cricketing fraternity, and to all of us who had the honour of knowing him. His legacy, both as a player and a person, will continue to live in our hearts and in the history of cricket. This is an incredibly painful and personal loss for me. He was not just a legendary cricketer- he was my uncle, my mentor, and someone I looked up to throughout my life,” Jaydev Shah stated.

Notably, Dilip's son Nayan Doshi played for Surrey, Derbyshire, and Saurashtra. He was also part of the Rajasthan Royals and Royal Challengers Bengaluru squads in the IPL.
