The Indian T20 League has always attracted the best of the executors of the cricketing skills in the shortest format of the game. The presence of so many highly skilled individuals in the league has produced some of the most remarkable performances in the league.
The Indian T20 League has been a witness to many record-breaking performances by the players till now. While it is a common say in cricket that, “records are made to be broken”, some of these records created in the Indian T20 League will take time to be broken or might never be broken.
175 runs in one innings by Chris Gayle: The 31st match of the Indian T20 League 2013 was being played between Bangalore and Pune at Bengaluru. This match saw history being created at the Chidambaram stadium.
Bangalore batted first in the match. Chris Gayle began the innings for Bangalore with Thilakaratne Dilshan. Gayle looked in a different mood and a heavenly touch from the very beginning of the innings.
The destructive knock from Gayle contained an over of ruthless hitting where he hit 5 consecutive sixes of Indian leg-spinner Rahul Sharma. Gayle stayed not out at the end of the innings at a score of 175 runs from 66 deliveries, in which he slammed 17 sixes and 14 fours. Bangalore finished the innings with 263 runs on the board and won the match by 130 runs. This achievement scoring 175 runs in one T20 innings will take some doing to be surpassed.
Virat Kohli’s dream season: Before the 2016 season of the Indian T20 League began, Virat Kohli did not have a single century in the shortest format of the game. After the season Virat had 4 centuries to his name.
Virat Kohli scored 973 runs from 16 matches in the tournament at an average of 81.08. He maintained a strike rate of 152.03 throughout the tournament. The level of consistency displayed by Virat Kohli in the 2016 season of the Indian T20 league will be very hard to replicate. Thus, the record of having 4 centuries in one season and scoring over 950 runs in one season may remain unbroken for some time.
MS Dhoni, the man always in finals: The 2022 season is going to be the 15th edition of the Indian T20 League. While Mumbai has won the title the highest 5 times, it is Chennai with the most number of appearances in the final (9).
The Chennai team led by MS Dhoni has played the most number of finals in the Indian T20 League. So, MSD has featured in all the finals for Chennai taking his number of final appearances to 9. Besides these 9 finals, Dhoni also played the final match for the Pune team in 2017, when Chennai was serving a ban. Thus, MS Dhoni has played the most number of finals in the Indian T20 League with 10 finals.
Amit Mishra’s highest number of Hat-Tricks: In the Indian T20 League, Mishra has appeared for two franchises, Delhi and Hyderabad. In his Indian T20 League career, Amit Mishra has played 154 matches. In these matches, he has picked up 166 wickets at an average of 23.97 and conceded runs at a rate of 7.35, which is very commendable.
But if we speak of records, Amit Mishra has picked up three hat-tricks in 2008, 2011 and 2013. This feat of taking three hat-tricks might be very difficult to break as many bowlers finish their career without a single hat-trick.
37 runs in one over: Yuvraj Singh’s six sixes in an over in the inaugural World T20 against England has become folklore over time. The significance of the achievement lies in the fact that this is the most number of runs that can be scored of an over if no extras are bowled.
However, with help of one extra in the over, this feat was surpassed by Chris Gayle and Ravindra Jadeja. Both of them score 37 runs in an over. While Gayle achieved the feat in the Indian T20 League of 2011, Jadeja did it in 2021. This record may remain intact in the Indian T20 League for some time.
