The Indian T20 league is the biggest T20 league in the world. It wouldn't be an overstatement to say that it is considered as a festival in India. However, like every other thing in this world, it isn't perfect. The league has had its fair share of controversies. Today, we shall be taking a look at the top 5 biggest controversies in the history of the league.
1) Spot-fixing scandal:
The spot-fixing scandal is one of the darkest spots in the history of the toughest 20 League. It occurred when the Delhi police charged Rajasthan's trio S Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila, and Ankeet Chavan with spot-fixing. Upon investigation, the players were handed life bans from cricket. Although the three players were found not guilty, Chandila was banned from all forms of cricket by the BCCI in 2016. However, Sreesanth's ban was lifted in 2020.
2) Slapgate Controversy:
The incident involved Harbhajan Singh and S Sreesanth, and took place during the inaugural edition of the league. During a game between the Punjab Mumbai, the "Turbanator" slapped the pacer. This led to Sreesanth crying in front of the cameras. The photo of him weeping went viral as well.
3) Shah Rukh Khan vs Wankhede security:
After a game between the Kolkata and the Mumbai at the Wankhede in 2012, the owner of the two-time champion got into a fight with a security guard at the ground. Apparently, when he was showing some of his kids and their friends around, the guard misbehaved with his daughter. However, another side of the story says that the Bollywood megastar was drunk at that moment. This controversy led to the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) banning SRK from entering Wankhede Stadium for the next five years.
4) 'Rave Party' incident:
Rahul Sharma and Wayne Parnell, who were representing the now-defunct Pune in 2011, found themselves in an ugly mess. Mumbai police found the duo at a 'rave party' after conducting a raid, which resulted in them getting arrested. As a matter of fact, the two of them tested positive for recreational drugs as well. However, both the players denied it, and said that they were at the wrong place at the wrong time.
5) Lalit Modi getting banned:
It is no secret that Lalit Modi was the brains behind the Indian T20 league. However, in 2010, the then ITL chairman was sacked from his post by the BCCI after charges of financial wrongdoing and corruption. It was reported that he was misusing his powers. Thus, the BCCI then banned him for life in 2013 from holding administrative posts.
