The BCCI is set to delay the announcement of the Indian team for the ODI series against England and the Champions Trophy. The announcement initially was slated to be made on Sunday, January 12.
However, according to a report, the announcement has been delayed to next week. This has raised concerns among Indian fans who were expecting the announcement to be made on Sunday.
Why BCCI has delayed the Champions Trophy announcement?
The BCCI is awaiting the result of the back injury that Jasprit Bumrah suffered during the Border Gavaskar Trophy. There are growing reports that the back spasm that Bumrah suffered from could be a worse injury and that could rule the star speedster out of the Champions Trophy.
The BCCI has consulted an orthopedic surgeon from New Zealand as they want the best doctors to look after Bumrah's case. This has led to a delay in the team announcement.
The BCCI could include Mohammed Shami in the squad for the ODI series against England and also the Champions Trophy. Shami has been out of action for the entire of 2024 from international cricket as he has been recovering from a surgery he had on his Achilles heel.
Shami last played for India in the 2023 World Cup final and had surgery on his Achilles heel in February 2024. He made a comeback to domestic cricket through a Ranji Trophy game against Madhya Pradesh and also featured in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
A swelling on his knee meant that Shami couldn't be a part of the final two Tests of the Border Gavaskar Trophy according to reports from the BCCI medical team. However, he is likely to be fit for the England series and the Champions Trophy.
The BCCI is also likely to add Yashasvi Jaiswal as a third opener in the squad and both Hardik Pandya and Nitish Kumar Reddy as all-rounders.
