Chennai Super Kings made a shocking decision to trade Ravindra Jadeja to Rajasthan Royals (RR) along with England all-rounder Sam Curran. In return, CSK got Sanju Samson from RR in an all-cash deal ahead of the IPL 2026 auction.

This deal signifies a huge shift in CSK’s thinking in strategy as they prepare for the IPL 2026 mini auction and possibly a life after MS Dhoni. Fans and observers were naturally intrigued by a transfer of this magnitude involving one of the Chennai Super Kings' most important and long-serving players in Ravindra Jadeja.
Why did CSK trade Ravindra Jadeja to RR for the IPL 2026 season?
The main reason for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) trading Ravindra Jadeja to RR was explained by CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan himself. The Indian all-rounder spent 12 seasons at CSK, won three IPL titles, and captained them during the 2022 season.
The CSK CEO stated that the team needed a top-order batter, and hence they went for Sanju Samson in the trade window. He also stated that the CSK team is in a phase of transition and the decision to part ways with Jadeja was taken mutually.
Ravindra Jadeja being traded to RR means CSK will have a few more crores in their purse when they enter the IPL 2026 auction in December this year. It will be a huge boost to the CSK franchise, who finished 10th in the IPL 2025, winning only 4 games out of the 14 they played.
Jadeja was the second most senior player in the CSK lineup after MS Dhoni. But despite his stature, Jadeja as captain, after Dhoni’s probable retirement after IPL 2026, was not something CSK wanted. Jadeja had captained CSK in IPL 2022’s first half, but the team struggled, and his own performance took a hit.
Jadeja has retired from T20Is for India and was not included in the Australia ODI series, signaling that the BCCI are probably moving on from the Saurashtra all-rounder, with Axar Patel and Washington Sundar being his replacements. Hence, Jadeja, 37, would want to finish in the franchise, where it all began for him.
CSK will also begin with fresher and newer talent after Jadeja, someone who will serve them for the next decade to come.
