Explained: Here is the reason why WPL franchises didn't bid for Alyssa Healy

WPL coaches explain why star Australian captain Alyssa Healy went unsold at the 2026 auction. The key reasons were the 'Four Overseas Player' limit and the universal preference for specialist all-rounders over wicketkeeper-batters like Healy.

In an interesting turn of events, Australian captain Alyssa Healy found no bidders in the Women’s Premier League 2026 (WPL) mega auction on Friday, November 27, which took place in Delhi.

Notably, Healy was the first name drawn from the eight-member marquee list to start the mega auction, but unfortunately, she couldn’t find any bids from any of the five franchises. Moreover, her name didn’t come out in the accelerated round as well.

After the mega auction, Abhishek Nayar, head coach of UP Warriorz (UPW) and Anya Shrubsole, assistant coach of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), had their say on why they didn’t bid for the swashbuckling top-order batter.

"Alyssa Healy going unsold was surprising for different reasons. When you're allowed only four overseas players [in the XI], your options are limited, and many teams prefer all-rounders in their set-up. It's a tough situation for someone of her stature,” Abhishek Nayar said.

"We have a very strong top order, and Georgia Voll gives us some offspin as well. With Richa Ghosh [as a wicketkeeper-batter] in the top five, going for Healy didn't make sense for us,” Anya Shrubsole said.

For the unversed, Healy entered the mega auction at a base price of INR 50 lakh after being released by UP Warriorz. Notably, UPW had signed Healy for INR 70 lakh for the first two WPL seasons, but a foot injury ruled her out of the last WPL season.

Alyssa Healy has accumulated a total of 428 runs from 17 WPL games at an average of 26.75 and a strike rate of 130.48. She is currently plying her trade for the Sydney Sixers in the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL).
