Former Indian batter Devang Gandhi has heaped praise on the Indian chief selector, Ajit Agarkar, for his bold selection calls over the past year. Notably, India went on to win the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 and the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 titles, with Agarkar serving as the national chief selector.
Apart from the white-ball dominance, India also had an exceptional red-ball format in the recently concluded Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy in England despite the absence of veteran players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.
Speaking to The Times of India, Devang Gandhi has made it clear that a selector’s job isn’t easy as they can’t please everyone. He also asserted that some decisions from the selectors may sound harsh, but ultimately, players have to wait for their time and grab the opportunity.
"Selector's job is not easy. It is not easy to please everyone. It’s never easy. Often, it’s not about selection but elimination. Some decisions may sound harsh. As a player, I understand the emotions of those left out. If things are communicated well, players also understand. Ultimately, you just have to wait for your time and grab the opportunity," Gandhi told TOI.
It’s worth noting that under Agarkar, India witnessed players like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravindra Jadeja retiring from the shortest format of the game. Moreover, Kohli, Rohit, and Ravi Ashwin bid adieu to the longest format of the game.
The Indian T20I captaincy was given to Suryakumar Yadav instead of Hardik Pandya, which turned out to be a controversial call. Moreover, Shubman Gill was appointed as the new Test captain after the veteran duo’s retirement from the format.
"Ajit and his team have done a very good job. Under their tenure, India has already won two ICC trophies, which people should not forget. On the recent England tour too, a young side did well," Gandhi concluded.
