England’s direct qualification for the upcoming 2027 ODI World Cup is in danger after the recent update in the ICC ODI rankings. With the latest update, England are now in the eighth position with 84 rating points — even below Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. England’s recent form in the 50-over format has been dismal.
From May 4, 2024 to May 5, 2025, they won just three out of their 14 ODIs, managing a win/loss ratio of 0.272. Only two teams are below them in terms of win/loss ratio: Nepal (0.200) and Bangladesh (0.142).
Fourteen teams will participate in the 2027 ODI World Cup. Among them, both Zimbabwe and South Africa have already directly qualified as co-hosts. Namibia is also a co-host, but as they are not a full member of the ICC, they are not eligible for direct qualification under that quota.
Along with the hosts, the top eight teams in the ICC ODI rankings as of the cut-off date—31 March 2027—will qualify directly. As it stands, England are in the eighth spot, just one point ahead of ninth-placed West Indies.
England will take on West Indies in a three-match ODI series from 29 May 2025
Interestingly, England and West Indies are scheduled to play a three-match ODI series starting from 29 May in England. If the Windies manage an upset and defeat the home side, the Three Lions could slip to ninth, making their chances of direct qualification even more difficult.
Notably, England have never played in the World Cup qualifiers in their ODI history. Hence, fans will hope for a turnaround in the upcoming matches to avoid such a scenario. England were crowned champions in the 2019 ODI World Cup but had a forgettable campaign as defending champions in the 2023 edition held in India.
Jos Buttler stepped down as captain following England's early exit from the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in the group stage. Harry Brook has now been appointed as the new skipper for England in both ODIs and T20Is. The upcoming months will be a major test for Brook and his team as they look to bring England back on the right track for direct qualification to the 2027 ODI World Cup.
