An exciting finish awaits as Day 5 of the Manchester Test approaches. India still trail by 137 runs with eight wickets in hand, chasing England’s massive first-innings total. However, all eyes will also be on the weather, which could play a big role in the outcome.
According to BBC Weather, there is a high chance of rain on the final day. The temperature is expected to hover around 19°C but could drop to as low as 12°C. Cloudy skies are likely throughout the day, which could help the England seamers. However, if rain interrupts play for long periods, it may offer India a chance to save the match.
Gill and Rahul will begin the proceedings on day five
Day 4 began with England captain Ben Stokes and Liam Dawson continuing their innings from 544/7. Jasprit Bumrah struck early to dismiss Dawson for 26, but Stokes and Brydon Carse added a 105-run stand for the ninth wicket. Stokes brought up a well-deserved century and was eventually dismissed for 141, while Carse contributed a handy 47 off 54 balls. England were finally bowled out for a huge 669 in 157.1 overs, securing a 311-run lead.
For India, Ravindra Jadeja led the bowling with four wickets. Bumrah and Washington Sundar picked up two each, while Anshul Kamboj and Mohammed Siraj claimed one apiece.
India were forced to bat for three overs before the lunch break, and that short phase turned into a disaster. Both openers — Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan — were dismissed for ducks, leaving India at 1/2 at lunch.
With the hosts holding the momentum, it looked like the match could end quickly. But captain Shubman Gill and KL Rahul had other plans. The duo fought hard, first in the second session where they added 85 runs in 26 overs, and then carried on through the final session. Their unbeaten 174-run stand steadied the innings and gave India some hope heading into the final day.
Gill remained unbeaten on 78, while Rahul was not out on 87. Chris Woakes bowled well early on, but the two Indian batters absorbed the pressure and slowly shifted momentum in their team’s favour.
