An exciting final day of the Edgbaston Test awaits both India and England. India need seven more wickets to seal a famous win, while England require 536 runs — a task that looks nearly impossible, but they’ll hope to survive and force a draw.
Weather may play a key role in the outcome. According to BBC Weather and Accuweather, rain is expected in the morning. At 7:00 AM local time, there is a 79% chance of rain, dropping to 22% around 1:00 PM.
Since play is scheduled to begin at 10:30 AM, the first session is likely to be affected. This could favour England, as a shorter day increases their chances of holding on for a draw. However, cloudy and overcast conditions are expected, which could help Indian bowlers swing the ball and go for the kill.
Shubman Gill's historic match
India came into Day Five after a commanding performance on Day Four. Despite losing Karun Nair early, KL Rahul scored a steady fifty. But once again, it was captain Shubman Gill who stole the show.
He scored 161 runs in the second innings, adding to his 269 in the first. With a total of 430 runs in the match, Gill now holds the second-highest aggregate by a batter in a single Test. He also became only the second Indian, after Sunil Gavaskar, to score a double century and a century in the same Test match.
Rishabh Pant continued his aggressive form with a quickfire 65, including eight fours and three sixes. With that, he broke the record for most sixes by a batter in an away country in Test cricket — hitting 24 sixes in England, surpassing England skipper, Ben Stokes’ 21 in South Africa.
Ravindra Jadeja also remained unbeaten on 69, helping India declare at 427/6, setting England a massive target of 608. England’s second innings began poorly. Mohammed Siraj dismissed Zak Crawley for a duck, and then Akash Deep bowled two superb deliveries to remove Ben Duckett and Joe Root.
At stumps on Day Four, England were 72/3, still 536 runs away, with Harry Brook and Ollie Pope unbeaten at the crease.
