The ongoing Oval Test between England and India has progressed at a rapid pace. Within just three days, three innings have been completed — both of India’s and England’s first innings. Now, with two days remaining, England need 324 more runs with eight wickets in hand. Given the brisk pace of the game so far, it’s highly likely that the result could be decided on Day Four itself.
However, weather could become a spoilsport and potentially stretch the contest into a fifth day. According to AccuWeather, there's a 40–50% chance of rain, particularly in the afternoon session of Day Four. While the morning is expected to remain clear, rain interruptions and delays are likely later in the day. Fortunately, Day Three saw no such disruptions and provided a full day’s play.
India resumed their second innings with Yashasvi Jaiswal and nightwatchman Akash Deep aiming to stretch their lead. What followed was an unexpected and impressive partnership. Akash Deep played a brilliant knock, scoring 66 runs and sharing a 107-run stand with Jaiswal for the third wicket. The youngster showed immense maturity and confidence against the English bowlers.
At the other end, Jaiswal continued his shots. However, skipper Shubman Gill and Karun Nair couldn’t capitalise and were dismissed cheaply. In-form all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja joined Jaiswal and the duo added 44 crucial runs. During this partnership, Jaiswal brought up his fourth Test century against England — and his sixth overall — before falling for 118.
Josh Tongue bagged a fifer for England in India’s second innings
Key contributions followed from Dhruv Jurel (34), Jadeja (53 off 77), and Washington Sundar, who played a superb counter-attacking innings of 53 off just 46 balls. India were eventually bowled out for 396, setting England a challenging target of 374 runs.
Among the English bowlers, Josh Tongue starred with a five-wicket haul. Gus Atkinson picked up three wickets, and Jamie Overton claimed two.
In response, England openers Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley got off to a steady start and looked comfortable. It appeared they would take England to stumps without any loss, but Mohammed Siraj struck with just two balls left in the day. He bowled a brilliant yorker to castle Crawley for 14, ending the day with a crucial breakthrough. England finished Day Three at 50/1, with Duckett unbeaten.
All eyes now turn to Day Four, especially the morning session. India’s bowlers will aim to make early inroads, while England’s batters will look to build partnerships and edge closer to a historic chase.
