Day two of the ongoing Leeds Test between India and England saw weather interruptions, with rain delaying the start of England’s innings. To make up for the lost time, play was extended towards the end of the day. As the match now heads into day three, all eyes are on how the game will unfold from this balanced position.
However, the weather might once again play a role. According to AccuWeather.com, there is a 65% chance of rain during the day, particularly between 2 PM and 4 PM local time. While some play could be lost during that window, forecasts suggest it won’t be a complete washout. Similar to day two, the match officials could extend play later in the day to make up for any overs lost to rain.
England trail by 262 runs with seven wickets in hand
At one point on day two, India were cruising at 430/3, looking set to post a massive total. But they suffered a stunning collapse, losing their last seven wickets for just 41 runs. The visitors were eventually bowled out for 471 in 113 overs.
Captain Shubman Gill scored a brilliant 147, and his deputy Rishabh Pant made a superb 134, as the duo added 209 runs for the fourth wicket. However, the rest of the batting lineup failed to contribute significantly, allowing England to fight back.
In reply, England lost Zak Crawley early, but Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope steadied the innings with a crucial 122-run stand for the second wicket. Duckett played a fluent knock of 62 before being dismissed by Jasprit Bumrah, who turned out to be India’s standout bowler.
Bumrah continued his dominance, removing Joe Root for the 10th time in Test cricket with a brilliant delivery late in the day. He finished with all three wickets to fall on day two. He nearly dismissed Harry Brook, too, but the dismissal was overturned due to a no-ball.
At stumps on day two, England were 209/3 in 49 overs, still trailing by 262 runs. Pope remained unbeaten on 100 and will resume day three alongside Brook. With seven wickets in hand, the hosts will look to bat long and close the gap, while India will aim to make early inroads and regain control.
